Creative Voices for Social Change | Workshop for Creatives of all Mediums

A virtual workshop for creatives of all mediums (visual artists, writers, composers, etc) longing to explore ways of using their creative voices for social change.

In a safe and loving space, we'll explore what it means for us to create work that calls for social change through art that-

• helps us process what we're learning while considering our own positioning/places of privilege/perspective,

• remembers, leaves evidence, documents, and archives,

• shifts the narrative and evokes liberatory imagination,

• and helps us rehearse the futures we're working to build
  

Together, we'll take care as we navigate a series of prompts to explore art as a conduit for social change starting with a gentle, somatic creative activity to center us in our bodies and let go of the pressure "get it right" with a reminder that learning is ongoing. We'll learn how artists have been disturbers of the peace throughout history + different methods of using art as resistance, time to let off some steam and make some 'angry art', and practice tapping into our creativity to stand in solidarity with our neighbors and call out injustice wherever it festers.

♡ Our hope is for every person who joins in to feel less alone and more brave in speaking out against social injustice, and to leave brimming with ideas of how to make art that resists, documents, and disseminates.

This creativity session will take place in a live Zoom meeting. Download the Zoom app software for use on a camera- and mic-enabled device that has stable internet service.

• Safe Space // The intention for this gathering is to be a safe and welcoming environment where affirmation and encouragement is abundant. This of course means that all must be treated with respect and care, including using participants’ preferred pronouns. Derogatory or aggressive comments about ability, culture, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity will not be tolerated.
  

• Trauma-Sensitive // We acknowledge the many overwhelming emotions in every body, and while we wish for this to be a safe space to hold and acknowledge it all, this is not a replacement for individual or group therapy. We will do our best to foster a safe place to release and share words that express our feelings, however, we kindly ask that we all refrain from “trauma dumping” or over-sharing personal information. At the start of the event, we'll learn more about what this means and how to be a mindful and embodied trauma-sensitive community.
  

• Not a Public Forum // This event is NOT a public forum for debate or justification of violence. Anyone doing so will be removed by the hosts.

kimberly kuniko (she/her) is a mixed-race Nikkei American illustrator, mixed media collage artist, and stationery designer based in what is now known as Duarte, California (unceded Tongva land). Her Japanese roots inform her art through a fondness for paper + storytelling, and the balanced detail achieved through intentional restraint. She loves to layer stories together, creating in the space where words and imagery intersect, seeking out the connections between disparate things that were never intended to belong together, but somehow do. Working out of her home studio she designs for her stationery + gift brand Lacelit, teaching creativity workshops, hosting themed guided retreats for creatives of all mediums, and facilitating the Dream & Scheme Community for Small Business Owners.

nicki newell (they/she) is an American non-binary illustrator and mixed media artist living in Scotland. Nicki's work focuses on storytelling, feminism, neurodivergence, motherhood, queer identity, activism, and their journey deconstructing American Evangelicalism. They primarily work in digital illustration but also dabble in embroidery, knitting, crochet, needle felting, and other fiber arts, using art as a means to communicate and process their emotions and lived experiences growing up in Christian Nationalism and White American Evangelicalism. Nicki's work explores the hypocrisy of the American church and giving a voice to their inner child in both abstract and metaphorical ways, hoping to create a space where other exvangelicals and people hurt by the church can feel seen as they continue to decolonize and deconstruct their upbringing.

keila sachi gaballo (they/she) is a neuroqueer, disabled Shimanchu-Ainu American mama, artist, and somatic expressive arts practitioner currently living on the unceded territory of the Kumeyaay peoples, also known as San Diego, CA. They have a passion for mental health education, diverse representation, and embodied social justice. Keila weaves these elements throughout their storytelling as an illustrator, hand-letterer, writer, and teacher. Keila is the owner of a small business called Mahealani and Back and founder of a non-profit called Back To You.

Keila loves to incorporate their indigenous Okinawan and Ainu, and Japanese culture into everything that they create and hopes to bring more queer, disabled, and BIPOC representation into the publishing industry someday as well. In the meantime, they’re working on launching a bookstore called Haisai Little Lotus, focusing on curating used books that share diverse voices and provide lessons that help deepen our emotional intelligence.
