Waterways is an original mixed media collage by Kimberly Kuniko exploring water as both a symbol for life, clarity, and renewal, alongside the imperative role it plays in our everyday lives as creatures who depend on water to regulate body temperature, protect organs and tissues, lubricate joints, and transport nutrients and oxygen to our cells, keeping us alive. Water's indispensability makes it a treasure- one that is too often taken for granted and squandered while neighborhoods across the globe lack access. This piece imagines a world where this liquid life is protected against pollution, flowing freely in all directions from one community to another- overlapping, merging, pooling together- and centering this most basic of needs as a starting place for building bridges, digging wells, sharing resources, and renewing our definition of what it means to value life.
The piece was shown in the We Are Water group exhibition at Art Space HP in Huntington Park from March 7-April 2, 2026. Watch gallery opening recap reel created by Kimberly Kuniko.
